WHERE IS TRUMP’S FAITH COUNSEL?
I recently spoke with someone who has been close to the National Faith Advisory Board in the White House. Given recent concerns about the kind of spiritual counsel being given to the President, I asked about this board and Paula White’s personal influence on the President. This leader clarified several things that may serve to focus our prayers more strategically for President Trump and the critical decisions he is making on behalf of the nation.
PAULA WHITE AND THE PRIORITY OF THE FAITH OFFICE
Since first being assigned to her role in leading the White House Faith Office (of which the Advisory Board is linked), Paula White’s charge has been to champion religious freedom. Protecting the sanctity of life and encouraging family values are also cited on the Office’s website, as well as promoting a strong America. Since President Trump was elected in 2024, White has spent more time travelling internationally to advocate for a strong America. As a result, the leader I spoke with indicated that the board has not been very active as White has not called the board together as much as in President Trump’s first term. It would appear, therefore, that the Advisory Board has had limited influence in the President’s decisions since his reelection.
THE PRESIDENT’S CABINET
Compared to his first term in office when many in his cabinet were hostile towards him, both personally and politically, President Trump’s current cabinet seems highly supportive. Notably, many of President Trump’s cabinet members are professing Christians. And it seems that any faith-based counsel the President might receive is likely coming from within his own administration. Especially since the assassination of Charlie Kirk, several of his cabinet members have been quite outspoken about their Christian faith, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth. At the same time, it is clear that not all the cabinet members hold to traditional Orthodox Christianity, thus the counsel is likely mixed.
THE PRESIDENTS’ STRENGTH – AND WEAKNESS
The leader I spoke with also made an observation. President Trump is extremely loyal to those who have supported him when others have scorned him. Some of his biggest mistakes – and questionable decisions – have come as the result of deferring to his loyalists. And though this may demonstrate a desire to be a team player in acknowledging the input of others, it reveals a potential blind spot. The President’s decisions cannot rest on the loyalty of a few, but on sound wisdom gained from a wider council of spiritual advisors (Proverbs 15:22, 24:6).
THE GAP BETWEEN CHRISTIANITY AND COURAGE
The other observation concerned President Trump’s recent remarks about going to heaven. It was suggested that such remarks are merely bait for his opponents and don’t necessarily reflect the President’s true state of mind, or heart. There have been numerous well-respected spiritual leaders in recent years who have given firsthand accounts of speaking with the President about his genuine conversion and his heartfelt faith in God. He has repeatedly made public statements declaring this nation to be under God and committed to biblical morality and conservative values.
It has been suggested that President Trump simply does not want to appear weak to the globalists. He has been very intentional in demonstrating strength and power whenever appearing with other world leaders, especially with those who have been hostile towards the United States. And many have been thankful for this, given the constant threats from other world leaders against our Republic. Perhaps he believes that any claim to his own personal faith could be perceived as an emotional crutch instead of a bold conviction. If there is any truth to this, then he needs a revelation of the true power of Christ. It is quite possible his own faith is genuine but lacking a personal Pentecost. This is something many have been praying for and, thankfully, the recent demonstrations of bold faith from several of his cabinet members may be paving the way.
As we continue to pray for President Trump, we can take our direction from Scripture.
- We can pray this President would seek out the One Counselor who will never fail him (Isaiah 11:2-5).
- That he would come to know the only world Ruler who has all wisdom and insight for every decision needed (Psalm 32:8).
- That he would come to see the fruit that comes when meditating on, and taking counsel from, the Word of God (Psalms 1:1-3).
- That he would be drawn to the secret place with an insatiable hunger for the counsel of the Lord and not the whispers of men (Proverbs 3:5-6, 13:20).
- That he would come to know the power of the resurrected Christ within his own heart and life (Ephesians 1:16-21).
May this President come to know, and walk in the reality of Acts 1:8. That the Holy Spirit would come upon him with such power, that he would become a firsthand witness “…in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
