I had a dream last night that highlighted a powerful truth in Galatians 5:18: “But if you are led by the SPIRIT, you are not under the LAW.”
In the dream, I was listening to a father/pastor who was insisting on getting involved in a situation to bring order. But I recognized something about his kind of oversight. He wanted to control the situation more than steward it. Though he presented his leadership as concern for others, his actions were driven more by fear, personal preferences, and preconceived ideas than genuine care for the sheep. His religious mindset couldn’t perceive what God might be doing because he was limited by what he could see and understand in the natural. In the dream, I was admonishing someone else to not listen to that voice.
I don’t believe this dream is necessarily about pastors or fathers. Rather, I believe the Lord is asking us to consider who or what we are allowing to govern our decisions. Which voices are we listening to? Which voices are leading us? Are we still bound to the laws of men and the natural order of things, or looking through the eyes of faith?
“So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by Faith. Now that this FAITH has come, we are no longer under a guardian” (Galatians 3:24–25).
The laws of God are certainly our anchor and guard us from sin and danger. But it is only through the person and power of Holy Spirit that we can walk by faith in that which we can’t control. Christ is our True Shepherd and Holy Spirit is now our “Guardian.”
When faced with uncertainty, our natural tendency is to tighten our grip. We want to manage the details, minimize the risks, and control the outcomes. And some of these actions may certainly come from a genuine sense of responsibility and concern for ourselves and those we love. But if we are motivated more by FEAR than by FAITH, we’re still missing the mark that God has for us.
The way of the Spirit fixes our eyes on the unseen realm and what God is accomplishing THROUGH THE VERY CHALLENGES WE MAY BE FACING. He opens our eyes to what we cannot see, reveals what human reasoning cannot discern, and leads us beyond the limitations of our own understanding. His Spirit reveals His complete victory over every obstacle and shows us how He is maturing us as sons and daughters – precisely because of the things HE is leading us THROUGH.
Our confidence cannot come from commandeering every detail in hopes of avoiding pain or discomfort. Our peace must rest in the One who has already gone before us, knows what lies ahead, and is fully prepared to walk with us through it all. One step at a time.
It’s not the unknown outcomes we need to fear or try and control. It’s allowing Fear to lead us instead of the One who already knows the way through.
